How to Prepare Your Yard for a Bounce House Rental
By William Gann, Jump Around Party Rentals • Published: September 1, 2024 • Last Updated: June 20, 2026
The crew arrives ready to set up. What slows everything down - or stops it entirely - is a yard that wasn't prepared. Here is exactly what to do the day before your bounce house arrives so setup goes smoothly and your party starts on time.
Why Yard Prep Makes or Breaks Delivery Day
In 16 years of deliveries across Greater Austin, the setups that go sideways almost always come down to the same handful of things: a gate that is too narrow, a yard full of debris from a recent tree trim, no clear path from the street to the setup spot, or an outlet that is 80 feet away and on a 16-gauge extension cord. None of these are complicated problems. They are all completely avoidable with 30 minutes of prep the day before.
The crew is there to set up the bounce house - not to move your patio furniture, reroute your extension cords, or navigate through fresh-cut brush. The more prepared your yard is when they arrive, the faster setup goes and the more time your kids have bouncing before guests show up.
Step 1 - Measure Your Space and Gate Before Anything Else
This is the step most people skip and the one that causes the most problems. Do these measurements before you book, not after. Showing up on delivery day with a unit that doesn't fit is a bad morning for everyone.
Gate width
Most standard bounce houses pass through a 36-inch gate when deflated and rolled. Measure the narrowest point of your gate opening - including any post lip, latch hardware, or fence overhang that reduces the clear opening. If you are under 36 inches, call us before booking so we can confirm which units fit. Do not assume.
Setup area dimensions
Standard 13x13 bounce houses need a minimum 15x15 feet of clear, flat space - that includes staking room around the perimeter. Combo units with slides need 15x20 feet minimum. Measure from fence to fence and account for any permanent fixtures like AC units, planters, or built-in seating that reduce usable space.
Overhead clearance
Standard bounce houses inflate to 14 to 16 feet tall depending on the unit. Check for tree branches, power lines, patio covers, or roof overhangs above the setup area. Low-hanging branches need to be at least 2 feet above the inflated height - and they need to stay that way for the full rental period, not just at setup.
If your yard measurements are borderline, call (512) 294-2221 before booking. We can confirm which specific units work in your space based on the actual dimensions rather than guessing.
Step 2 - Clear the Entire Path, Not Just the Setup Spot
This is the most overlooked part of yard prep. People clean up the setup area and forget about everything between the gate and the setup spot. The crew has to carry and maneuver a large deflated inflatable through that entire path. Anything in the way becomes a problem.
We have had to maneuver bounce houses through brush left behind after someone trimmed their trees the morning of delivery. Moving a large inflatable through loose branches is asking for a puncture or a tear. Clear the whole path - from the street or driveway, through the gate, and all the way to where the unit is going.
Remove from the path
Lawn furniture, potted plants, garden hoses, toys, bikes, and anything else stored along the route from the gate to the setup area.
Remove from the setup area
Sprinkler heads, dog toys, lawn ornaments, rocks, pinecones, and pet waste. Anything sharp or hard under the unit creates a puncture risk or an uneven surface.
Deal with recent yard work
If you trimmed trees, mowed, or edged recently, make sure all clippings, branches, and debris are fully cleared and bagged before the crew arrives. Do not leave piles anywhere near the path or setup area.
Secure pets
Dogs need to be inside or secured away from the setup area before the crew arrives and for the full duration of the rental. Pet waste in the setup area is a setup stop - the crew will not work in an area with animal waste present.
Step 3 - Locate Your Power Source
Every bounce house runs on a continuous blower that must stay on for the full rental period. That blower needs a reliable power source within reach of the setup area.
Outlet requirements
Standard 110V outlet. GFCI outdoor outlets work fine. The outlet needs to be within 50 feet of the setup area. If it is further than 50 feet you will need a heavy-duty extension cord or a generator.
Extension cord rules
If you need an extension cord, use a 12-gauge or heavier outdoor-rated cord only. A standard cheap indoor extension cord will overheat running a bounce house blower for several hours. This is a fire risk, not just an inconvenience.
Dedicated circuit preferred
The blower draws significant amperage. Running it on the same circuit as a refrigerator, AC unit, or other high-draw appliance can trip your breaker mid-party. Use a dedicated outdoor circuit if available.
No outlet? We have generators
If your setup area has no practical outlet access, Jump Around Party Rentals rents generators. Add one to your order at booking. Parks and open field events almost always need a generator - plan for it in advance.
Setting up at a park or public space? Check our rental FAQ for park-specific setup requirements including outlet availability and permit considerations.
Step 4 - Flag Underground Utilities Before the Crew Stakes
Bounce houses on grass are secured with stakes driven into the ground. If you have anything buried in the setup area, it needs to be marked before the crew arrives. This is your responsibility as the homeowner - the crew has no way to know what is under your lawn.
Irrigation lines
If your yard has an irrigation or sprinkler system, mark the line locations with small flags or spray paint before delivery day. Stakes go through irrigation lines. Repairing a severed irrigation line costs significantly more than a $3 pack of marking flags.
Invisible fence wiring
Invisible pet fence wires run shallow and are easy to sever. Mark the perimeter wire path in the setup area before the crew arrives. A cut invisible fence wire means your dog can escape the yard for the rest of the rental period.
Buried cables and utility lines
Landscape lighting cables, low-voltage wiring, and other buried lines should be marked. If you are unsure what is buried in your yard, call 811 - Texas One Call - before delivery day. It is a free service and they will mark utility lines within a few days of your request.
Septic systems
If your property is on a septic system, know where the tank and drain field are located and keep the setup area away from them. Heavy inflatable equipment on a drain field can compact the soil and damage the system over time.
Step 5 - Check Your Surface and Slope
The surface under the bounce house affects both safety and anchoring. Not every backyard surface is equally suitable and some require special setup approaches.
Grass - ideal
Dry grass is the best surface. Stakes go in easily, the surface is soft for kids, and the unit stays stable. Wet or muddy grass is workable but increases the chance of stakes pulling out in wind. Mow before delivery if grass is tall.
Concrete and asphalt - workable
Hard surfaces require sandbags instead of stakes. Jump Around Party Rentals brings sandbags for hard surface setups - let us know at booking so we come prepared. Concrete is fine; the unit just needs to be weighted differently.
Slopes - limited
Bounce houses cannot be safely set up on slopes greater than a few degrees. If your yard slopes, identify the flattest section before the crew arrives. A sloped unit is both a safety hazard and an anchoring problem.
Artificial turf - call first
Some artificial turf installations cannot be staked without voiding the warranty. Check with your turf installer before booking. We can use sandbags as an alternative anchoring method in most cases.
For a detailed breakdown of anchoring methods by surface type, see the bounce house anchoring guide.
Step 6 - Communicate With the Crew Before They Arrive
Jump Around Party Rentals pre-arranges delivery details before every event. If there is anything about your property that needs special attention - a tricky gate, a narrow driveway, parking restrictions on your street, or a neighbor situation - tell us before delivery day, not when the truck pulls up.
Be home at delivery time
Someone needs to be present when the crew arrives. If no one is home, we call the client. We will not set up an unattended inflatable - it is a safety issue, not a preference. Our crew goes over safety details with a responsible adult before leaving the site.
Tell us about access issues in advance
Narrow driveways, locked side gates, low-clearance overhead structures, or any access quirk your property has. The delivery crew can plan around almost anything if they know about it before they arrive.
Have a backup setup location in mind
If your primary setup spot has an issue the crew identifies on arrival, having a second location option saves time. Even a rough idea - "we could also put it in the front yard" - gives the crew options rather than a dead stop.
Check the weather forecast
Check the forecast the afternoon before your event. If rain, lightning, or winds above 20mph are expected, call (512) 294-2221 by 7am on your event day. Your deposit converts to a one-year raincheck.
Your Bounce House Delivery Day Checklist
Save this infographic before your rental date. It covers the six things to do before the crew arrives - in the order they need to happen.
Most delivery delays come down to one missed item on this list. Thirty minutes of prep the day before is all it takes to make sure setup goes smoothly and your party starts on time.
The full printable checklist is in the section below.

Yard Prep FAQ
How wide does my gate need to be for a bounce house delivery?
Most standard bounce houses require a minimum 36-inch clear gate opening when deflated and rolled for delivery. Measure the narrowest point including any latch hardware or post overhang that reduces the opening. If your gate is under 36 inches, call (512) 294-2221 before booking - some smaller units can fit through narrower gates.
Can I set up a bounce house on concrete or a patio?
Yes. Hard surface setups use sandbags instead of ground stakes. Jump Around Party Rentals brings sandbags for any hard surface delivery - just let us know at booking so we come prepared. The setup process takes slightly longer on hard surfaces but the result is equally secure. See the anchoring guide for full hard surface details.
What if my yard has a slope?
Bounce houses need a reasonably flat surface - no more than a few degrees of slope. If your yard slopes, identify the flattest section before the crew arrives and communicate that location clearly. A sloped setup is both a safety issue for kids and an anchoring problem. If you are unsure whether your yard qualifies, send us a photo or describe the slope before booking.
Do I need to mark my sprinkler lines before delivery?
Yes - mark any irrigation lines, invisible fence wiring, or buried cables in the setup area before the crew arrives. Stakes go into the ground and the crew has no way to know what is beneath your lawn. Marking flags cost a few dollars at any hardware store. A severed irrigation line costs considerably more to repair.
What extension cord do I need for a bounce house?
Use a 12-gauge or heavier outdoor-rated extension cord. Standard indoor extension cords are not rated for the sustained amperage draw of a bounce house blower and can overheat over a several-hour rental period. If your outlet is more than 50 feet from the setup area, a generator is a safer option than a long extension cord run.
What happens if my yard isn't ready when the crew arrives?
If the yard requires significant prep work before setup can begin, it delays the entire schedule and eats into your rental time. The crew cannot move heavy patio furniture, clear debris piles, or wait for pets to be secured. Minor things can be handled on the spot, but major prep is the homeowner's responsibility. Use the day-before checklist in this guide to avoid any surprises on delivery day.
