Party Planning Guide
How to Plan a Bounce House Party From Start to Finish
By William Gann, Jump Around Party Rentals • Published: July 15, 2024 • Last Updated: June 20, 2026
Everything you need to pull off a great bounce house party in Greater Austin - from booking the right unit six weeks out to waving goodbye to the crew after teardown. This is the master checklist we wish every customer had before they called us.
Why Most Bounce House Parties Go Wrong - And How to Avoid It
After 16 years and thousands of deliveries across Greater Austin, the problems we see at bounce house parties almost always trace back to the same handful of mistakes: booking too late and losing the date, picking the wrong size unit for the yard, not measuring the gate, not telling the kids the rules before anyone sets foot inside. None of these are complicated. They just require thinking about the party before the morning of.
I'll give you one example. Last summer we showed up at a house in Cedar Park and the gate was 30 inches. The family had booked a combo unit. We had to go back to the warehouse and swap it out, which meant they started 90 minutes late. That was a painful morning for everyone involved - and it was completely avoidable with one measurement the week before.
This guide walks through the full planning process in order. It links to our deeper resources on safety, anchoring, layout, and rotation where those topics deserve more than a paragraph. Read it once before you book and you will have everything covered.
Step 1 - The Booking Timeline
The single most common reason a family doesn't get the bounce house they want is that they called too late. Central Texas summers are brutally competitive for party rentals. Here is how far out to book depending on your event type.
| Event Type | Recommended Booking Window | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Summer birthday party (June-Aug) | 4 to 6 weeks ahead | Peak season. Popular dates go fast. |
| Spring/fall birthday party | 2 to 3 weeks ahead | More availability but weekends still book up. |
| School carnival or field day | 8 to 12 weeks ahead | Multiple units needed. COI processing time. |
| HOA block party or 4th of July | 6 to 8 weeks ahead | 4th of July is the busiest single rental day of the year. |
| Corporate or church event | 6 to 10 weeks ahead | COI, multi-unit packages, and logistics planning. |
| Last-minute (under 1 week) | Call (512) 294-2221 directly | We sometimes have cancellation availability. Never guaranteed. |
Check live date availability at the party rental availability calendar. If your date shows open it is genuinely available - reserve it with a 25% deposit to lock it in.
Water slide season gets particularly busy. Combo bounce houses with slides and standalone water slides book out weeks in advance. During the peak of summer - especially July - we receive dozens of orders and phone calls a day. Sometimes, when we have the availability, we will actually load an extra water slide on the truck in case a last-minute order comes in. But I highly recommend not counting on that. Book early and lock your date.
Step 2 - Choosing the Right Unit
The two questions that determine your unit: how many kids, and what is the age range? Everything else flows from those two answers.
Under 10 kids, ages 2-8
Standard 13x13 bounce house. One unit handles the crowd. Browse bounce houses.
10-20 kids, mixed ages
Combo bounce house with slide. More activity per unit, better for older kids. Browse combos.
Summer party, any size
Water slide or wet/dry combo. Kids stay cool. Browse water slides.
20+ kids or school event
Obstacle course or multiple units. Call for multi-unit package pricing.
Not sure which to book? The bounce house vs combo guide walks through every decision factor in detail. Still not sure - call (512) 294-2221 and describe your party and we will tell you exactly what to book.
Step 3 - Preparing Your Yard
The crew arrives ready to set up. What slows everything down is a yard that hasn't been prepared. Do these things the day before.
Measure your space
Standard units need 15x15 feet minimum. Combos need 15x20 feet. Measure from fence to fence including gate swing clearance.
Check your gate width
Most units fit through a 36-inch gate when deflated. Measure the narrowest point including any gate frame overhang. If under 36 inches call us before booking.
Clear the area
Remove lawn furniture, toys, sprinkler heads, and pet waste from the setup area. The crew cannot move heavy items. Low-hanging branches need to be at least 2 feet above the unit height.
Locate your outdoor outlet
The blower needs a standard 110V outlet within 50 feet. GFCI outdoor outlets work fine. Extension cords must be 12-gauge or heavier - never a cheap indoor extension cord.
Flag your utilities
If you have irrigation lines, invisible fence wiring, or buried cables in the setup area, mark them before the crew arrives. Stakes go into the ground and we cannot be responsible for unmarked utilities.
Level surface required
Units cannot be set up on slopes greater than a few degrees. If your yard slopes, identify the flattest section before the crew arrives. Grass, dirt, concrete, and asphalt all work.
One thing people often overlook: make sure the path to and around the setup area is completely clear of debris - not just the spot where the unit goes. We have actually had to maneuver an inflatable through brush after someone trimmed their trees the morning of delivery. Moving a large inflatable through loose branches is asking for a puncture or tear. Clear the entire path from the gate to the setup spot the day before.
For a deeper dive on surface types and anchoring methods, read the complete anchoring guide. For layout planning in your specific yard, see the backyard birthday layout guide.
Step 4 - The Day Before and Day Of
Jump Around Party Rentals sends a pre-delivery text with your arrival window the afternoon before your event. Here is what to expect and what to have ready.
The day before - check the weather
Check the forecast. If rain or winds above 20mph are expected, call (512) 294-2221 by 7am on your event day. Your deposit converts to a one-year raincheck. See the full weather policy in the rental FAQ.
Be home for delivery
We do our best to pre-arrange all delivery details before the event day. Parents are often busy with other party preparations, and we understand that. If we arrive and no one is home, we call the client immediately. It is not safe to leave an unattended inflatable without some form of adult supervision on-site. Our process always includes going over the safety details of the specific unit being delivered - that conversation has to happen with a responsible adult before we leave.
Setup and inspection
The crew stakes the unit, runs the blower, and walks through a safety check before leaving. Setup typically takes 20 to 45 minutes depending on unit size. Do not let kids inside during setup.
Brief the kids before anyone goes in
No shoes. No food or drinks inside. No flips or rough play. No mixing big kids with toddlers. One adult supervising at all times. See the full rules in the bounce house safety guide.
Manage the flow through the party
Rotate kids in and out in groups to avoid overcrowding. The bounce house works best as one station in a larger party - not the only activity. See the rotation strategy guide for how to keep the party moving.
Teardown - you don't have to do anything
The crew returns after your rental window, deflates the unit, and removes everything. Make sure the yard is clear of kids and guests before they arrive. Teardown takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Step 5 - Safety Rules Every Host Needs to Know
Jump Around Party Rentals handles inspection, anchoring, and setup. The safety of what happens once the kids are inside is the host's responsibility. Here are the rules that matter most.
One adult supervising at all times
Never leave the bounce house unattended with kids inside. The supervisor should be outside the unit watching, not inside bouncing with them.
Separate age groups
Never mix toddlers under 5 with kids over 8. The weight and size difference is the leading cause of bounce house injuries. Run separate sessions if your guest list spans a wide age range.
Capacity limits are real
Standard bounce houses hold 4 to 6 kids at a time depending on age and weight. Overcrowding is the second most common cause of incidents. Enforce the limit.
Shutdown conditions
Wind above 20mph: clear and deflate. Lightning anywhere nearby: shut down immediately. Heavy rain: shut down. If you have any doubt, shut it down.
I have cancelled bounce house rentals myself on a Saturday when gusts hit well over 20mph across multiple scheduled deliveries. I knew customers would be upset - and some were. Every one of them received a raincheck for two rentals to make it right. Safety is not something we play around with, especially when it comes to kids. No party is worth that risk.
The full safety framework - age guidelines, weight limits, wind thresholds, supervision standards, and the complete pre-event checklist - is in the bounce house safety guide. Read it before your first rental.
Step 6 - Planning the Party Flow Around the Bounce House
The bounce house should be one station in a well-organized party, not the only thing happening. When the bounce house is the only activity, you get crowds, arguments over turns, and burned-out kids by hour two. Here is a simple 3-hour party structure that works.
| Time | Activity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 0:00 - 0:30 | Arrival and free bounce | Early guests burn energy. Smaller group means easier supervision. |
| 0:30 - 1:00 | Games or activities away from bounce house | Rotate kids to yard games. Gives bounce house kids a rest. |
| 1:00 - 1:30 | Food and cake | Everyone out of the bounce house. Good natural break point. |
| 1:30 - 2:00 | Open bounce - second session | Kids are recharged after food. Second bounce session feels fresh. |
| 2:00 - 3:00 | Gifts, free play, wrap-up | Bounce house available but not the focus. Natural wind-down. |

Bounce House Party Planning FAQ
How far in advance do I need to book a bounce house in Austin?
For summer birthday parties, book 4 to 6 weeks ahead. Spring and fall parties can usually be booked 2 to 3 weeks out. School carnivals and HOA events need 8 to 12 weeks. Check live availability at the booking calendar and lock your date with a 25% deposit.
How much space do I need in my backyard for a bounce house?
Standard 13x13 bounce houses need approximately 15x15 feet of clear, flat space including staking room. Combo units with slides need roughly 15x20 feet. Your gate needs to be at least 36 inches wide for delivery. Call (512) 294-2221 if you are unsure whether your yard fits.
What if it rains on my party day?
Light rain alone does not automatically cancel a rental. Heavy rain, lightning, and winds above 20mph are shutdown conditions. Call (512) 294-2221 by 7am on your event day if weather is a concern. Your deposit converts to a one-year raincheck. Full policy in the rental FAQ.
How many kids can be in a bounce house at once?
Most standard bounce houses hold 4 to 6 kids at a time for ages 5 to 12. Toddler units hold fewer. The capacity limit is printed on the unit. Overcrowding is one of the most common causes of bounce house incidents - enforce the limit even when kids push back. See the full safety guide for capacity rules by unit type.
Does Jump Around Party Rentals handle delivery and setup?
Yes. Every Jump Around Party Rentals booking includes delivery, setup, anchoring, and teardown. The crew arrives before your event start time, sets up and inspects the unit, and returns after your event to remove everything. You do not touch a stake, strap, or sandbag. What you see at checkout is what you pay - no surprise fees on delivery day.
Should I get a bounce house or a combo unit for a birthday party?
For parties with kids under 7, a standard bounce house is usually enough. For mixed ages or older kids, a combo unit with a slide keeps everyone engaged longer. The full breakdown - cost, space requirements, age fit, and activity variety - is in the bounce house vs combo guide.
